Broad House Hotel is an impressive country house in a spectacular location on one of Norfolk’s best known Broads. Our client wished to convert this Grade II property into an exclusive boutique hotel. As such the project required very careful design to ensure that the current requirements in terms of fire protection and means of escape for hotels could be incorporated within the building without affecting its form and character, nor compromising its Listed Building status.
The design ensured therefore that great consideration was given to the existing layout of the building whilst adapting it to accommodate a commercial kitchen and create additional bedrooms at first and second floors with en-suite bathrooms. The existing formal living, dining and reception rooms, including the original ballroom, were all retained and refurbished.
A high standard of finish was important, with an eye to also keeping the historic features of the house intact, even though in some instances these were necessarily concealed behind new stud walls.
The project required extensive negotiation with the Conservation Officer and indeed the Planning Department and was eminently successful, winning The Broadland Enhancement Award of High Commendation.
