With over 25 years designing imaginative and innovative buildings, our multi award-winning RIBA chartered practice is highly experienced in delivering outstanding architecture. In line with our philosophy of sustainability, we are experts in contemporary building practices and technologies as well as offering extensive experience in the conservation sector.
Buildings have an important role to play in our society and we have a duty as architects to ensure the buildings we live and work in are beautiful, healthy environments. They should lift us spiritually, physically and aesthetically. And none more so than our own homes. Our homes can be places of sanctuary, of industry, relaxation and family activity. They are private spaces and also social hubs. Places we can retreat to, share the joy of families coming together and places where we can enjoy the company of friends. Buildings that not only give us somewhere to sleep and store our belongings but that also fill us with joy and perhaps even fulfil us.
With many years of experience in all aspects of the commercial sector, we offer our clients a full service from carrying out feasibility studies to ascertain the viability of various project ideas, through site development of ‘brown field’, city centre or rural sites, to new build and refurbishment.
The creation and adaptation of buildings for industry has in recent years included projects in the high-tech electronics, food and printing industries among others.
Architectural conservation is the management of change of our historic built environment. As a practice dedicated to sustainability, we regard our role in working on these special projects as having a dual remit: the opportunity to protect the historic fabric and detail of a building as well as establishing renewable and energy conservation systems in support of both building and environment.
Whether new build, alteration or reconfiguration, we design high-performing buildings that deliver long-term value, are flexible, responsive and adaptable. Experience and knowledge leads us to engage early on with our clients and their staff to ensure layouts support efficient clinical pathways and that the workforce is used effectively.
Clients who come to us value our distinctive approach and the broad scope of our expertise. Our organisation’s holistic engagement with sustainable, high quality buildings for education is founded on the belief that all teaching environments should be inspiring as well as comfortable and practical. Teaching has evolved over the years and indeed continues to do so in response to both environmental circumstances and political changes. The design of educational buildings needs to be responsive to these changes, enabling self-teaching clusters and smaller teaching groups as well as the more traditional larger class formats.
Developing a site requires a range of skills if a successful outcome is to be achieved, be it redevelopment of redundant city centre buildings, finding use for a disused ‘brownfield’ site, or even gaining permission for a ‘greenfield’ site.
We offer wide-ranging experience in the Community sector with projects that include the refurbishment and creation of new community centres, village halls, doctor and dental surgeries, nursery and school accommodation, day centre or day care facilities, sports centres, health clubs and environmental centres.
More than ever we need to consider how the buildings we create are affecting the environment. We have been involved in eco and sustainable architecture since our inception in 1994. In 2006 we constructed our first fully eco-sustainable project using a full range of eco technologies including timber frame construction and insulation created from shredded newspaper. The house featured an early version of ground source heating and had generally high levels of thermal insulation throughout. It continues today to be just as effective as it was when first built, keeping the house warmly insulated and utility bills to a minimum.
The ‘Paragraph 79” projects have become somewhat of a Holy Grail for those individuals determined to go out on a limb and create a unique bespoke dwelling for themselves. Likewise for architects the challenge of obtaining approval from a local authority for one of these schemes is not only a test of ones design ability but also of mastering the sustainable technology available in both construction and renewable energy generation.
