Braydestone

An award-winning project imaginatively preserving the character of an 1890’s coach-house whilst converting it into a largely open plan family home, with a contemporary feel. Retaining the external appearance of a building is often a requirement by the Planners and frequently an interesting challenge.

This scheme therefore uses the existing envelope of the building without any major external alterations, to retain its original form and character, whilst achieving an outstanding internal conversion.

Internally, the existing roof trusses were adapted to give proper head height at first floor. This was done to maintain the existing roof height and pitch and involved carefully raising the lower chord of the roof and the use of new steel fixing plates to the existing truss members.

At ground floor, the intention was to keep an open plan feel to the house and in this light the client opted for under-floor heating. This meant we could utilise full height windows in many locations. Additional area at ground floor was also created by the reconstruction of a building that had previously stood on the site.

The project exceeded the client’s expectations and has created a unique dwelling.
