Mill Cottage

Small hamlets in idyllic rural locations often have a collection of simple cottages that, although perhaps well located, with good views and outlook, are often today too small for contemporary family living. This is one such example. A ‘two-up, two-down’ red brick semi-detached cottage set on a steep slope with glimpses of a distant view across the Yare River Valley.

The client’s brief was to enlarge the existing house in the most efficient way possible within the constraints of a limited budget and restricted site. The scheme was developed as a timber frame design. Cedar cladding and a glazed gable facing the garden contrasted with, but did not compromise, the setting of the existing brick house.

The ground floor extension created a downstairs bedroom, a kitchen and two shower rooms. The home now offers proper accommodation for family living whilst retaining the form and character of the existing house.

This project is an example of how even the smallest schemes need as much thought and attention to detail as the larger projects.
