Beech House

From the 1950’s through to the 1960’s there were many large private houses constructed on good size plots throughout the country. However, many of these now need a complete overhaul and improvement to bring them up to 21st century living standards.

Room layouts and sizes in the architecture of the day tended to be compartmentalised whilst the windows, if still original, are now often shot and the thermal performance of the fabric of the house is usually unacceptable by current standards.

This scheme focuses on resurrecting one such 1950’s house to make it more comfortable, give it a contemporary feel and bring it into line with today’s living standards and habits. The project radically reconfigures the plan internally with the addition of a glazed atrium on the garden side. Living accommodation across the ground floor is connected and leads seamlessly out onto the garden.

A new garage allows better connection to the home with the addition of a proper place for the dogs. Re-cladding externally pulls the house together visually and provides much needed thermal insulation. At roof level a balcony along the new atrium is a unique feature giving long views across fields to the broads beyond.
